Two die in Lake Waukomis canoe accident Two brothers drowned early Saturday in a canoe accident in Lake Waukomis, police said.
They were identified as James Utter, 23, and John Utter, 24, who both lived at the lake.
The incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. and the bodies of the two were recovered in 25 feet of water about 9 a.m. by divers using sonar.
Detective Bob Boydston of the Lake Waukomis Police Department said the chain of events leading to the accident began about 1:30 a.m. when residents called police to report a disturbance and a fight. Two men reported to be involved in the incident then left the scene and returned later to take a canoe out into the lake.
At about 3:30 a.m. the same residents who reported the disturbance called to say they heard the men in distress in the 100-acre lake.
The bodies were recovered by members of the Lee’s Summit Underwater Rescue Team. Jim Summers of the unit said they received a call about 4:18 a.m.
The yellow canoe was pulled ashore about 10:30 a.m.
Other law enforcement agencies involved included the Weatherby Lake Police Department, Platte County Sheriff’s Department, and the Jackson County medical examiner.
